  • In its completed version, the Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers comprised 17 volumes of articles and 11 volumes of illustrations, published in Paris between 1751 and 1765. The work was intended to represent the most advanced state of contemporary knowledge in every discipline conceivable, ranging from natural history and mathematics to religion and philosophy to the mechanical arts.
