- The value chain concept was developed by Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School in his Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance, published in 1985. The value chain is a way of viewing a business firm, hospital, or any other type of organization in terms of value-adding opportunities.
