Definition

  • A mug shot is a photograph taken by the police of someone arrested on suspicion of criminal behavior. Usually the picture is of the suspect's head and shoulders (“mug” being slang for “face”) and often two pictures are taken, one from the front (full face) and one from the side (profile).
