Preferred term
intersection of gender and race
Definition
- As forms of oppression and privilege, race, class, and gender “intersect” in people's individual lives, in the cultures and communities of which they are a part, and in the institutions that give structure to their life chances. The notion of intersection highlights the way in which these forms of oppression are bound together, making it impossible to truly understand a race dynamic, for instance, without also considering the influence of gender and class.
