  • Theodore Dreiser, often considered the foremost naturalist writer of his day, gave his readers descriptive tales of human survival and the abuses of forces beyond their control. One of his most famous works, Sister Carrie (1901), gives the grim tale of a young girl working in a Chicago shoe factory.
