Concept information
Preferred term
popular culture
Definition
- Popular culture (such as cinema, pop music, popular novels and digital games) is often compared with ‘high’ or ‘elite’ culture (such as ‘serious’ art, opera and more ‘difficult’ literature), where popular activities are seen as more widespread than minority tastes in high/elite culture. It is also often contrasted with the concept of ‘mass culture’, where the term popular culture is often used to avoid the more negative connotations associated with a critique of ‘mass culture’ as inauthentic by the likes of Oretago Y Gassett (1994 [1932]).
