Preferred term

obesity and academic performance

Definition

  • While research is generally consistent regarding findings of poorer academic achievement among obese children and adolescents compared to their normal-weight peers, a causal relationship between obesity and academic performance cannot be assumed. Thus, research suggests that obesity is associated with, but not a cause of, low academic performance. [Source: Encyclopedia of Obesity; Obesity and Academic Performance]
