- Streptococcus species are spherical gram positive bacteria that grow in chains or pairs. Streptococcus species are a major cause of human disease and are the etiologic organisms for many cases of meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis, endocarditis, strep throat, and necrotizing fasciitis.
