  • The agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) was established in 1989, and its mission, according to its Web site, “is to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans.” AHRQ is housed within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The agency's budget for the 2012 fiscal year was $405 million, with about 80 percent of this amount dedicated to supporting contracts and grants with an emphasis on improving health care.
