cracking the whip

Definition

  • Cracking the Whip, or versions of it, have been popping up in schoolyards and backyards for centuries, as paintings from as far back as the 1500s depict contestants of all ages taking part in the action. Also known as Smack the Whip, it is an outdoors-only and wildly tuned-up version of Follow the Leader (Whether He Wants You to or Not!).
