- Criminologists and criminal justice system officials rely on crime statistics to obtain greater insight into currently existing crime levels and to determine whether rates of crime are increasing or decreasing over time. Criminologists utilize crime data to help test current theories of criminal behavior and to help them develop newer theories as they learn more about general crime trends.
