Definition

  • Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an incurable genetic disorder affecting the capability to produce healthy red blood cells, found in hemoglobin, which carry oxygen produced by the lungs to other cells of the body. In patients with SCD, hemoglobin cells cluster together to form sickle-shaped structures that block the circulation of oxygen-rich blood. [Source: Encyclopedia of Global Health; Sickle Cell Anemia]
