Concept information
Preferred term
ecotourism
Definition
- Ecotourism—with its emphasis on minimal environmental impact, empowering local populations, financing environmental protection initiatives, and educating tourists and hosts alike on their environmental as well as cultural surroundings—offers remarkable potential to link conservation interests to economic development, particularly in the developing world. While by no means a panacea, much of the promise of ecotourism centers on its ability to bridge northern and southern nation-state interests by providing an environmentally benign funding mechanism for economic development in the southern hemisphere.
