Definition
- Until recently, most Western-educated psychiatrists and other mental health professionals were not formally trained to consider cultural factors when diagnosing or treating mental illness. This was the case despite significant academic publications documenting the fact that culture influences how individuals manifest illness, discuss symptoms, anticipate treatment, and plan for possible outcomes with healers (e.g., physicians, shamans, and clergy).
