- ALTHOUGH SURGICAL ONCOLOGY is a recognized subspecialty of surgery in Europe, there is not a standardized teaching and training protocol for this field. The European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) was founded in 1981 to establish the highest standards of surgical treatment of cancers.
