- Palau, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean 500 miles east of the Philippines, is one of the world's youngest and smallest sovereign nations and one of the wealthiest in the region. Since well before the first European contact in the late 18th century, Palau has been a kinship culture with the basic social unit a single, ancestral kin group comprising a mother and her children.
