Definition
- In the course of their work, police officers sometimes have to decide whether to use deadly force or high-speed chases to catch fleeing felons. While common law at the time of the adoption of the Fourth Amendment allowed officers to kill fleeing felons rather than permit them to escape, the twenty-first-century U.S. Supreme Court has decided that such actions, which constitute “seizures,” are subject to Fourth Amendment reasonableness requirements.
