- An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diseases and treatments of the visual system. Ophthalmologists often work closely with optometrists and usually provide diagnosis and treatment for more serious eye diseases and disorders such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataract.
