Definition
- Rapid economic growth, expansion in the social sectors, including health care, and secure employment led to significant improvements in living standards and health status in many of the eastern European countries during the early years of central planning. Infant mortality rates fell by nearly half in the communist countries, and life expectancy at birth increased by around five years.
