Preferred term
president pro tempore
Definition
- Officially the highest ranking senator, the president pro tempore (a Latin term meaning the president “for the time [being],” often shortened to “president pro tem”) is in practice a largely ceremonial leader. By tradition, the post goes automatically to the senator in the majority party with the longest service record. [Source: Congress A to Z; President Pro Tempore]
