  • Next to incineration, the disposal of solid waste by landfilling in quarries or via artificial hills constitutes the oldest form of disposing of waste. The Romans created the Monte Testaccio in Rome, a 35-meter-high hill created by the shards of containers that were used to merchandise goods such as wine, oil, and grain.
