- A branch of applied psychology with its roots in the vocational guidance and veterans' services movements of the early and mid 20th century. Counseling psychology emphasizes the scientist-practitioner model of training and has contemporary emphases in the following areas: counseling and psychotherapy, positive psychology, life-span development, vocational development, health psychology, and cultural factors.
