- Hooch, sometimes spelled hootch, is a popular slang word referring to grain-based alcohol with a high alcohol content, generally white whiskey, which is either illicitly produced, of inferior quality, or both. Hooch gained popularity during the Prohibition era of the 1920s, later becoming commonly associated with the mountainous regions of the American South.
