- U.S Army general and president Military leaders are—naturally enough it would seem—usually known for what they do or achieve on the battlefield. Dwight D. Eisenhower, on the other hand, began his career as a staff officer and rose through the ranks in the U.S. Army to become the most prominent American general in the most important war of the twentieth century.
