Oceania
Definition
- The countries that make up Oceania—the southwest Pacific continent of Australia and the Pacific island states of Polynesia in the east (including the large southern New Zealand archipelago), Melanesia to the west (including the island nation of Papua New Guinea), and Micronesia to the northwest—all share a recent history of Christianization associated with European colonialism and settlement. This history begins with contact as early as the seventeenth century in Micronesia through the twentieth century in the New Guinea Highlands. [Source: Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion; Oceania]
