  • A contract research organization (CRO) is an organization contracted by the sponsor to conduct preclinical, clinical, and other trial-related functions. CROs can be classified into four basic categories: brokers; Phase I organizations; Phase II, III, and IV monitoring groups; and full-service CROs.
