performance art and social movement media: augusto boal
Definition
- Augusto Boal was a theater practitioner and theorist responsible for developing a system of innovative sociopolitical, interactive, and proactive performance methods designed to empower oppressed groups to both recognize how oppressive power structures function and engage in performances of social resistance. In addition to organizing social action among marginalized groups, Boal's theatrical techniques are used internationally in “educational, communal, and therapeutic contexts” to teach historically privileged and marginalized people about the intricacies of power deployment among dominant ideological systems.
