Preferred term
social distance
Definition
- Social distance, as the phrase is generally used now, is an easily grasped notion. When people are asked to name individuals they know, they can generally rank-order them from those with whom they have the “closest” relationships to those who are “farther away.” Everyone seems to have a sense for what social distance means on this interpersonal basis.
