  • British electrical engineer who was awarded a share in the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1979 for his contributions to the creation of the computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT) scanner. Hounsfield's invention combined X-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views and three-dimensional images of the internal organs and structures of the body.
