emergency medicine

Definition

  • The first organized efforts to perform emergency medicine were undertaken during the French Revolution, thanks to the contributions of a French surgeon, Dominique Jean Larrey. In the wake of the Napoleonic armies, he conceived the idea of an ambulance, or, as it was called at that time, voiture d'ambulance volante, for the fast transport of wounded soldiers at the camp infirmary.
