Early African American faculty such as Solomon Carter Fuller (Boston University Medical School, 1919); Joseph R. Applegate (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1955); and Jay Saunders Redding (Brown University, 1949) earned full professor status during a tumultuous period in higher education.
