  • Leprosy is increasingly known by the less offensive name of Hansen's disease (HD). It was the first chronic disease to be attributed to a bacterial cause, when the Norwegian physician Gerhard Armauer Hansen identified the bacillus Mycobacterium leprae in 1873.
