- Metaphysics in the sense of the treatise that is known as Aristotle's Metaphysics is not concerned with entities that are supposed to exist beyond the empirical world but with the fundamental traits of the empirical world itself, taking into account the scientific theories about the world. That is why this treatise was ranged behind (or after—meta in Greek) the treatise on Physics and was called Metaphysics.
