appendicitis

Definition

  • Appendicitis, sometimes known as epityphlitis, is a condition whereby people suffer from an inflammation of the appendix. Some milder cases can resolve themselves using the body's natural functions, but most require the removal of the inflamed appendix either by laparotomy or laparoscopy, often leaving a small scar.
