  • Academic medical centers (AMCs) were established after World War II, with federal funding for university-based science programs. Federal funding has continued to be their primary funding source; Medicare and Medicaid legislation provides explicit support for medical education and delivery of medical services to specific populations such as the poor and the elderly.
