Definition
- Pretending is a form of play that children around the world use to amuse themselves, a product of symbolic and nonrepresentational thought processes that can transform a boy in a tree fort into a pirate standing on the deck of his ship, or a girl who tries on her mother's jewelry into a fairy princess. During pretend play, a wading pool can be the setting for deep sea exploration or a backyard can become a magical land filled with strange unearthly creatures.
