- Up to 40 percent of people in Western countries are estimated to regularly experience heartburn, the most characterisitic symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)—the muscle connecting the esophagus with the stomach.
