community colleges

Definition

  • Community colleges are an American phenomenon that has grown from a modest enrollment of less than 100 students in 1901 at Joliet Junior College, in Illinois, to over 10.4 million students enrolled in credit and noncredit programs and courses at over 1,200 colleges in the United States. Earlier community colleges were called “junior colleges,” and their primary purpose was to provide freshman and sophomore courses leading to university studies.
