  • A generic strategy coined by Michael Porter whereby a firm leads the industry by maintaining the lowest costs and offering its products or services to a broad market at the lowest prices. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the low-cost leader Southwest watched its competitors struggle, some in and out of bankruptcy court.
