- Lyndon B. Johnson (1908–73) was a national politician who served as congressman and senator from Texas, vice president under John F. Kennedy, and upon the assassination of Kennedy on November 22, 1963, president of the United States. He ran successfully for election as president in his own right on the Democratic ticket in the 1964 contest against Republican Senator Barry Goldwater.
