- Peep shows began innocuously enough as innocent amusements to be shown on the streets or at carnivals in the 16th century. Usually called “raree shows,” denoting something rare or unusual, in England, they were closed boxes containing peepholes that featured and emphasized drawings of buildings, battles, or current events.
