- Charles Bell was a Scottish surgeon, anatomist, and artist whose research on the anatomy of the brain made a vital contribution to the field of neurology. Bell published important volumes for the discipline and discovered Bell's palsy, the paralysis of the facial nerve that supplies the facial muscles on one side of the face, and the Mona Lisa syndrome.
