Definición
- Pope of the Roman Catholic Church John XXIII was the 259th pope (earthly head of the Roman Catholic Church and bishop of the diocese of Rome) and served as pope from 28 October 1958 to 3 June 1963. Born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in the Italian village of Sotte il Monte near Bergamo on 25 November 1881, he was dubbed “Shepherd of the Modern World” (Hebblethwaite 1985, title) primarily because he called the Second Vatican Council (Vatican City, 1962–1965), through which the Roman Catholic Communion actively and explicitly engaged modernity.
