  • THE SURGEON GENERAL of the United States from 1961 until 1965, Luther Terry became well known for his criticism of tobacco and for his warning, issued on January 11, 1964, that smoking tobacco was a health hazard, highlighting the problems of lung cancer in unequivocal terms. Luther Leonidas Terry was born on September 15, 1911, in Red Level, Alabama, the son of James Edward Terry, M.D., a graduate of the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama, and the local doctor for the town of Red Level.
