As the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)–recognized Comprehensive Cancer Center in western Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) works to “advance the understanding of cancer; to develop innovative methods for cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment; and to provide state-of-the-art cancer care.” The UPCI was founded in 1984, earning Comprehensive Cancer Status by 1990.
