Maroon societies
Definición
- During the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in the West Indies and Guyana, enslaved Africans who managed to escape and become fugitives were known as Maroons and formed Maroon societies. The spirit in these fugitives that desired to be free was the basis of the system of these societies. [Source: Encyclopedia of Black Studies; Maroon Societies]
