  • The study of social influence—which is defined as the process wherein one person's attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors are changed as a result of interaction with another individual or with a group—is an important area of research in multiple fields of study, ranging from social psychology, communication, and sociology to economics and even computer science and physics. Social influence takes many forms and can be more narrowly conceptualized as compliance (change in attitudes, beliefs, or behavior as a result of a direct request); persuasion (change in attitudes, beliefs, or behavior as a result of exposure to a message); or conformity (the tendency to align one's attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors with those around oneself), among others.
