  • Born on January 15, 1906, in Buffalo, New York, George W. Thorn is the endocrinologist who discovered cortisone as a treatment for Addison's disease; bringing the first kidney dialysis machine to the United States; participating in the first successful kidney transplant in the 1950s; and serving as editor in chief of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, a well-respected medical resource.
