- Michigan was originally home to various Native American tribes; in the 1600s, French fur traders began settling the state, founding Detroit in 1701. After passing between the French, British, and Americans, and then becoming embroiled in a dispute with Ohio commonly referred to as the Toledo War, the territory now known as Michigan became a U.S. [Source: The Social History of Crime and Punishment in America: An Encylopedia; Michigan]
