- Library and information science (LIS) is a relatively generic phrase that describes a multidisciplinary field characterized by numerous specializations, areas of research, and theoretical philosophies. While there are subtle differences between library science and information science that can be explored further in the literature, LIS is defined as the study and practical application of systems facilitating the identification, acquisition, organization, and dissemination of information.
